Kerri King is the incredible "momtrepreneur" and owner/designer of Kingfolk Co. - kingfolkco.com - a company that designs one-of-a-king bibles with personalized bible covers for people. After the death of her dad, she put her heart into Jesus and started designing bible covers and her designs and art took off!

These days, with business booming, Kerri had to find a way to manage being a stay-at-home mother with her hectic work schedule. So, she combined the two! She created a new office and moved into it with her entire family; Now, she can literally put on whatever she wants, open a door, and she’s at work!

So, how does Kerri King make it all work? We found out in an exclusive Q&A…

1. As a working mother who runs her own company, what is your usual "work attire"?

Depending on what’s going on for the day, it’s a mix of either super comfy clothes or business attire. Whether I have on comfy clothes or dressy, I find that getting fully ready for the day leads me to be more successful.

2. Have you always wanted to have your own company, or what inspired you to?

I have been an entrepreneur for almost 20 years. When I first started out, I owned a photography studio. I didn’t really focus too much on being a business owner, I just wanted a creative outlet to do what I loved. Now that I’ve been in the creative entrepreneur space for many years, I have learned to love all the aspects of running a business and all the freedom it allows. Yes, I still love creating products but I also love crunching numbers and marketing. Owning a business requires wearing so many hats but I have loved every minute of it.

3. You just combined your house and warehouse together as one. How does that work when sometimes you just want to get away from your staff/work mindset?

Thankfully, our floor plan allows for lots of room to get away from the workroom. We have several areas to escape the day-to-day grind of work. I even have a secret nook in my closet that’s just for me to escape to and design, create new products and read my bible. I love the ability to float in and out of the workspace as needed. I didn’t know at first if I would like living in the same location as our business but it has been so fun! Our employees feel more like family so having them here feels very natural and non-intrusive. Our vision for our workshop is to have a welcoming and cozy environment that leads to creativity and togetherness.

4. How has creating these bible designs helped you in your life? What line in the bible is your favorite right now?

I am a creative person by nature. Designing, especially something so important as a bible, has been so amazing. It is a combination of 2 of my favorite things - design and faith. My favorite scripture from the Bible is Numbers 6:24 which says, “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.” I have definitely felt the grace of God through my life and I hope my business is a reflection of that grace.

5. What is your advice to other women like yourself who want to start their own company?

Give yourself grace. Heaping loads of grace! It’s easy to want things to be perfect but being able to step into a place of grace and allowing yourself to fail will sustain you in the long run. I use failure as a pivot into something new. It’s NEVER an excuse to quit. Failure has put me exactly where I am today and failure will guide my steps in the future too. Never be afraid to fail!

6. How has New York played a part in your business? We hear you have lots of customers from here!

New York is the epicenter for all things fashion. As a designer, I look to the trends and color schemes coming out of New York to base my new designs off things I’m seeing as trends. It’s important for me to stay current with what is in style because I’ve noticed the faith-based industry can be a little bit lacking in the trending department. I want Kingfolk Co products to stand out and provide a trendy Bible that people want to pick up and read.

 7. What is the next goal for Kingfolk Co.?

We are working hard behind the scenes with other designers in the faith-based industry to collaborate on new designs for our products. I love working with other designers in my field to create new things. It’s been so life-giving to bring others into the design space alongside myself to work towards a common goal.

8. When you aren't working, what are your favorite designers to dress up in for a night out?

I don't have a specific favorite designer, but I appreciate a variety of styles and enjoy exploring different fashion brands. I am more interested in the style of clothes, not the designer itself. I believe that fashion is an expression of oneself and everyone should wear what makes them feel confident and comfortable.  I love supporting local boutiques for my clothing needs. As a small business owner myself, I love knowing that my clothing purchases are helping another local small business.
